Whisky investment in previous years
If you had started investing in Scotch whisky in 2016, where would you be now? What about in 2018, or as recently as 2022?
Our investor example accounts are a useful way to see how Scotch whisky on our platform has performed over the last few years. But these contain only the whiskies that were available on the platform when the accounts were launched in 2015.
So how have the whiskies we have released more recently performed? In the following analysis, we will look at theoretical investments of £10,000, made in each year from 2016. For the sake of clarity and simplicity, these investments will each begin a whole number of years from the date of the analysis (29th January 2024).
In each case, the account will buy an equal volume of all whiskies released in the previous year, reserving enough cash to fund storage costs for the appropriate number of years.
We have used historic data to calculate initial purchase costs, and calculated current valuations in the same way used to show valuations in your account balance.
Investments at 2 years show the highest returns. This is perhaps surprising, given the nature of the investment. There are initial costs involved with the investment (commission fees upon first purchase of the whiskies) that will reduce short-term profitability – these fees are of course not repeated and become less impactful with longer investments.
However, a look at the recent performance of the market makes everything clear. Over the last two years or so, demand for Scotch whisky has been increasing across the whole industry, with supply struggling to keep up. Prices have been driven up, and while this trend is unlikely to continue into 2024, investors have had an opportunity to make excellent profits in the short term.
In general, mid- and long-term investments are more suitable, but recent trends have certainly shown that there are times when short-term investments can make sizeable profits.
