Grain whisky distilleries in Scotland
Information about active Scottish grain distilleries
Grain whisky is the unsung hero of the Scotch whisky industry. 85% of Scotch whisky drunk worldwide is blended, typically containing up to 70% grain whisky. Grain spirit provides a smooth canvas on which a skilled blender can paint details using malt, and while it can often be overlooked, none of the world's most popular Scotch whiskies would be possible without grain whisky.
There are far fewer grain distilleries than there are malt distilleries in Scotland, with only 8 distilleries compared to 139 for malt. However, the production method of grain spirit involves using column stills that are much larger than the pot stills used for malt, and so their capacity is much higher. Of the 8 grain distilleries in operation, 6 have a higher capacity than even the largest malt distillery, Glenlivet.
